ASTM D482 Ash Content from Petroleum Products
Petroleum products may produce ash when burned. Ash may come from dirt, rust, bituminous compounds and other sources. Ash producing substances may clog filters and increase wear in many applications. This method determines the percent of ash producing compounds in petroleum products with no metallic additives including fuels, oils, waxes and other petroleum products. Products containing ash forming additives should be tested according to ASTM D874 (Sulfated Ash).
The sample is placed in a clean, dry, crucible, heated, burned until no flammable material remains and ignited in a muffle furnace. The percent ash is calculated and reported.
