FTM 3010 (FED-STD-791C method 3010) – Solid Particle Contamination in Aircraft Turbine Engine Lubricants (Gravimetric Procedure)
Lubricants for turbine engines require a high level cleanliness. Particulate contamination from environmental dust and dirt, wear metals, oxidation products and insoluble or spent additives may clog filters and decrease system efficiency. In addition, ash from oxidized additives may lead to increased emissions. This test determines the total solid particle weight and the weight of ash these particles may produce. It is intended for aircraft turbine engine lubricants and related fluids.
A sample is filtered through a tared filter paper. The paper is solvent rinsed, dried and weighed. The total contaminant level is reported in mg/L. The filter paper is then ashed and the ash weight is reported in mg per liter oil.
