ASTM D3443 Chlorine in Trichlorofluorethane
Trichlorofluoroethane is a non-toxic and inflammable cooling agent used in air conditioners, refrigerators and other cooling applications. If residual chloride ions are present, they may accelerate the corrosion of metals in the cooling system. This method determines the amount of ionizable chloride in trichlorofluoroethane and other halocarbons.
The sample is placed into a separatory funnel, water is added and the mixture shaken. The water layer is removed and titrated with mercuric acetate to a colorimetric endpoint. The parts per million chloride is reported.
