FTM 3722 (FED-STD-791 Method 3722) Molybdenum Disulfide Content of Non-Soap Thickened Lubricating Greases

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a silvery, black solid with high temperature stability. It has excellent lubricity properties, and may be used as a solid lubricant or as a thickener in grease lubricants. “Moly” finds applications in aerospace, motor vehicles and many other areas. This test determines the amount of MoS2 in grease. It is intended for greases that are not thickened by soap – for soap-thickened greases, please see FTM-3720.

Through a series of reactions and extractions, the solids in the grease are isolated and the molybdenum disulfide content is determined. Reported are the percent solids in the original grease, the percent molybdenum disulfide in the grease solids, and the percent molybdenum disulfide in the original grease.
