ASTM D2109 Nonvolatile Matter in Halogenated Organic Solvents and Their Admixtures

Halogenated organic solvents are used in metal cleaning products, automotive aerosols and lubricants.  If the solvent contains nonvolatile preservatives or contaminants, they may alter the effectiveness of the end-use product.  This method determines the amount of nonvolatile matter in halogenated organic solvents and their admixtures.

This method has three options:   In Test Method A, part of the sample is placed in an evaporating dish, and an automatic feed system is set up to keep the level constant.  When the sample is near dryness, it is placed in an oven to complete the evaporation. Test Method A reports weight percent or ppm by weight.   In Test Method B, the sample is placed in an evaporating dish and heated to evaporate to dryness.  The parts per million nonvolatile matter by weight is reported.  In Test Method C, the sample is placed in an Erlenmeyer flask and evaporated until a small amount of sample remains.  The sample is transferred to an evaporating dish and evaporation continues at a lower temperature.  The ppm by weight is reported.
